Junior Captain's Day
Congratulations to Matt Westall, winner of the Junior Captain's day. Matt, playing off 19 handicap, scored a fantastic 44 stableford points to pip his brother Chris by 3 points. 3rd place was taken by 8 year old Reece Bloor, who returned an impressive 38 points! Well played
On a day of truly atrocious weather, the worst a Captain has had since 2008, members of the club and guests turned out in large numbers to support this important event. The day was well supported and made over £600 for the Captains charity which this year is MacMillan Cancer Support.
Battling gale force winds and driving rain, Susan Wilkinson 'mopped up' the Ladies prizes with overall winner and the longest drive at the fourth, Pat Westaway and Carol West were a close 2nd and 3rd. In the Men's section, newcomer Zach Rosen lifted the trophy by 1 point from Alan House and Geoff Barrett. The longest drive at the first was won by Alex Ogilvie, nearest the pin at the twelfth went to Keith Smallman and Fred Kent took the Pro's approach with his second into the seventeenth.
Jim Maddever Memoral Trophy - Stableford Competition Winner
Virtually a year to the day that Jim passed away, the Whitsand Bay Vets Golf Section held a stableford competition for the Jim Maddever Memorial Trophy on the 13th August. Jim's widow Bobby donated the trophy and was on hand to present it to the inaugural winner Peter West and Jim's son Philip took photographs of the presentation.
The event was well attended, and keenly contested, on a perfect day for golf, played in true gentlemanly conduct befitting of both Jim and golf. The winner was Peter West on 40 points on count back with runner up Geoff Barrett also on 40 points, both of whom were close friends of Jim's family.
Based on best 2 of 3 points saw Colin Bowden, Joe Hearn and Don Busby first with 91 points on count back, and Dave Thomas, John Wilson and Geoff Barrett runners up also on 91 points.
Dell Rawlins was delighted to win the nearest the pin on the 10th green and won bottles of wine for his team.
